Disparities in sanitation access

  • Objective: To assess the use of unimproved drinking water and sanitation and its association with demographic factors in Ghana.
  • Key Findings: Majority of households (81.6 %) used uunimproved sanitation facilities while 8.9 % used unimproved drinking water
  • Recommendation: Government, partners and non-governmental organizations toInvest in rural water infrastracture, supporting behavorial change programs and enhancing education and awareness campaigns targeting households with poor sanitation conditions.

Project Description

Access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation remains a major public health challenge in Ghana. Despite global targets to achieve universal access to safe drinking water by 2025 and eliminate open defecation by 2030, progress has been slow. In this project, we use data from the 2017 Ghana Maternal Health Survey (GMHS)—a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey of 26,324 households—to examine household-level patterns and determinants of unimproved drinking water and sanitation facilities. The analysis focuses on geographic disparities (Northern, Middle, and Coastal zones), household characteristics (size, rural/urban location), and socio-demographic factors of household heads (age, sex, education). Findings will inform policy interventions aimed at improving water and sanitation infrastructure and reducing open defecation practices in Ghana.
